TikTok is back online. Other ByteDance apps? Not so much

TikTok has resumed services in the U.S. after a temporary suspension due to new legislation. However, other ByteDance apps like CapCut, Lemon8, and Marvel Snap remain unavailable, with no clear timeline for their return

In a recent turn of events, TikTok has managed to restore its services in the United States after a temporary suspension due to compliance with the newly enacted divest-or-ban law, which took effect on January 19, 2025. Despite this positive development for TikTok users, other applications under ByteDance’s umbrella, such as CapCut, Lemon8, and Marvel Snap, remain inaccessible to U.S. users, with no clear timeline for their return.

TikTok’s Temporary Suspension and Return

On January 18, 2025, TikTok suspended its services in the U.S. to comply with the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which required foreign-owned apps to divest their U.S. operations or face a ban. This move led to the app’s removal from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, rendering it inaccessible to new downloads and updates. Existing users were greeted with messages indicating the service was no longer available in the U.S.

However, following assurances from President Donald Trump to issue an executive order extending the deadline for ByteDance to seek a buyer and providing immunity to service providers, TikTok began restoring its services on January 19, 2025. Despite this restoration, Google and Apple have yet to reinstate TikTok in their app stores, limiting access for new users and preventing updates for existing ones.

Continued Unavailability of Other ByteDance Apps

While TikTok navigates its path back to U.S. users, other ByteDance-owned applications have not been as fortunate. Apps like CapCut, a popular video editing tool; Lemon8, a social media platform; and Marvel Snap, a card game developed in collaboration with Second Dinner, remain unavailable in the U.S. Users attempting to access these apps are met with notifications about their unavailability due to U.S. legal requirements.

The developers of Marvel Snap expressed surprise at the sudden outage, stating on Twitter, “The outage is a surprise to us and wasn’t planned. MARVEL SNAP isn’t going anywhere.” This sentiment reflects the broader uncertainty surrounding the future of these applications in the U.S. market.

Governmental Responses and Legal Implications

The U.S. government’s stance on ByteDance’s applications has been firm, citing national security concerns over data privacy and potential foreign influence. Senator Tom Cotton praised app stores for removing ByteDance apps and warned that facilitating their return could lead to massive legal and financial consequences.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA) serves as the legislative foundation for these actions, aiming to mitigate risks associated with foreign-controlled applications operating within the United States.

Future Outlook

As TikTok works towards full reinstatement in the U.S., the fate of other ByteDance applications remains uncertain. The tech community and users alike are closely monitoring the situation, awaiting further developments and official statements from both the companies involved and government authorities.

In the meantime, users and creators who relied on these platforms are exploring alternatives, while businesses assess the impact of these disruptions on their digital marketing strategies.
